20th April 2015 – Page to Moab

Barney of MG Guru fame is not traveling with us today we said good bye to him last night. He has been a great help to us these past few days, both with the mechanics of the cars and local knowledge, we will miss you Barney. This morning we take a scenic drive out of Page past Navajo Mountain and other lovely red rock formations on our way to Moab in Utah, which is some 250 miles away. The minor roads are fantastic, so smooth and much more interesting than driving on a motorway. It is after all about the journey and not the destination. We drive from Arizona into Utah, passing through Monument Valley. As we look out over the mesas & buttes from the information centre we expect to see a covered wagon coming along the red dirt road or John Wayne ride up on his horse. The Monument Valley has been used as a location to film many movies including John Wayne’s Wagon Train. We take a detour on a dirt road to get closer to the mesas & buttes. We continue our drive onto Moab passing snow capped mountains on the right and left of us, just stunning. As we arrive in Moab we are joined by a lovely orange Triumph Spitfire and it follows us into out hotel. Calvin the Triumph driver is a member of the Whitworth Nuts Motoring Club that is a mixed marque club based in Grand Junction and the surrounding area. He has driven over 100 miles to meet us, which is a real buzz for us. After we settle into our hotel Calvin escorts us to The Arches National Park to watch the sunset. What a stunning park this is, it has enormously gracious rock formations that contrast starkly against the twilight skyline. We watch the sunset over the park and then we walk up to a place called the Windows and see the fading back light of the sunset reflecting off the rock that frames this enormous window that nature has created, just breathtaking. After sunset Calvin takes us to the Moab Brewery for dinner, where the boys enjoy a locally brewed beer.
