26th April 2015 – West Yellowstone to Butte

It’s snowing! And it looks like it’s been snowing for most of the night as the cars are covered in snow. Michael parked Shiraz with the bonnet undercover last night as he wants to replace one of our headlight bulbs this morning. So our car is only covered in snow on the roof and rear window. The car park looks so pretty.By the time we leave to go to breakfast it is still snowing, but the snow isn’t building up on the road so driving is OK. After breakfast it’s still snowing as we drive into Yellowstone National Park. It’s just beautiful the pine trees are covered in snow it’s a real winter wonderland today. We stop at Gibbon Falls to look out over the river and park.We drive on to Canyon Village and around a loop road that takes us past upper and lower falls in the Yellowstone River. We come across a herd of bison on the road and they have snow on their thick fur, they don’t look very happy. Shiraz decides to stall in the middle of the herd and one of the bison was only 1 meter from the car, a tad close for my comfort as I had the window down and they’re taller than the GT.We continue on to Mammoth Hot Springs, the snow is easing now and it’s time for a hot chocolate. The springs here cascade down the side of the hill leaving behind a limestone deposit, so there are many small pools of hot water encased in crusty limestone walls. We decide to leave the park now as it’s still snowing and the chance of seeing much more wildlife is slim. Any smart bear like Yogi will be tucked up in his cave on a day like today, so we drive north out of the park and into Montana, as we are currently in Wyoming. On the way out of the park the snow disappears and we come across an elk that has started to grow its antlers, they’re currently about 6″ high.As we drive along the motorway it’s either snowing or raining and very overcast and the trucks are really blowing our little cars around as they fly past us at over 70 mph. The snow isn’t settling on the road but it’s quite wet with lots of spray. We decide to drive to Butte for our overnight stop with plenty of time this afternoon for the guys to play with their cars, visit the auto shop opposite or have a bit of down time.
