14th April – Thakhek to Vientiane

Today we have a 335 km drive to Vientiane & fortunately it’s not as humid as it was yesterday so it feels quite a bit cooler. As we leave Thakhek the streets are lined with the locally made rubber rubbish bins, it must be garbage day!

There are obviously people here with loads of money, judging by the houses.  This house was on a double block, with the block next to the house covered with big diggers and other equipment.  One house had so much road making equipment around it & in front of it you could hardly see the enormous hose behind it.

The Laos New Year celebrations are in full swing and there is water being thrown everywhere, the music is blaring out, people are dancing in the street and having a great time.  The closer we get to Vientiane there are more people celebrating.  We get bucket loads of water & hoses tossed over the car. It is such fun to be here at this time.

Going into Vientiane we stopped at the Buddha park which has hundreds of statues of Buddhas & Hindu gods.

The girls couldn’t resist the dinosaurs & stopped for a play.

The boys liked the more recently added Hindu display, probably because it was in the shade.

We even found a Buddha apprentice in our group!

Tonight in Vientiane right outside our hotel there is a stage set up with non stop music playing & the traffic is gridlocked. It is like Carnivale in South America, it is a great atmosphere.

We have dinner in a lovely restaurant and we try the deep fried crickets, which are 3 times richer in protein then chicken! They are crunchy and don’t have much taste, so we only ate a few each.
