9th April – Angkor Thom Complex Siem Reap

Today our guide Sam took us to his favourite temple, Bayon which was originally a Buddhist temple and later was turned into a Hindu temple.  Sam briefed us in the difference between the 2 types of temples and the way the Buddhas were changed to Shiva by adding a 3rd eye on the forehead and a beard.  We entered Angkor Thom through the south gate.

The temples at Angkor Thom were built in the 12th century and then lost under the jungle until the late 1800’s but weren’t uncovered until the 1920’s. They have been rebuilt which took about 50 years.  The carvings are in really good condition.

There is one place where you can get face to face with a Buddha.

After Bayon we went to the Ta Prohm the Tomb Raider temple, but Angelina Jolie was no where to be seen, just a bunch of Aussie adventurers.

This temple has been left as it was found with amazing 500 year old trees growing
out of it with the root systems twining around the structure. The trees might look dead as they have lost their leaves in the dry but as soon as the rainy season starts they sprout leaves.

After the “Tomb Raider” temple we went for lunch then back to our hotel for a cool down in the pool and air conditioning before heading off to our sunset cruise on Tonle Sap Lake and to see the floating village.

Once we started cruising the deck hands, who were a couple of kids from the village gave us a massage fir $1US each.

The floating village has stores, bars, a school and even a Catholic church!

One of our team bought a sack of rice & donated it to the school to feed the poor. After we visit the school we board the floating bar which is complete with crocodiles and snakes to watch the sunset.

When we leave the lake it’s dark, so the bus drops us off near our hotel so we can go for dinner.  We are really enjoying the Cambodian food, it is really fresh & tasty without too many chillies, and it goes so well with the local beer!
