27th January 2015 – Ushuaia to Rio Grande

Today is the official start of our MG Pan American Highway trip as the highway starts in Ushuaia and we only have a short drive north back on Route 3 to Rio Grande for approximately 212km all on sealed roads – yey, no dust today.  We had a slow morning and had some photo shots done around town before we left. This one is taken out the front of our hotel, we looked out over the water and mountains, but unfortunately today is a bit overcast. This is a sign down at the harbour in town.We took these as we were leaving the township. As we drove along it was misty rain, but we’d been fortunate enough to see the wonderful scenery on our drive in 3 days earlier when it was lovely & sunny.  The mountains are actually quite nice covered in mist.  Ushuaia facts – the temperature doesn’t change much from summer to winter, it is unseasonably warm at the moment.  In the winter they have about 2 metres of snow and there is a ski field with a chairlift just out of town on the main road. In the winter the area is popular for dog sledding.  While at dinner tonight the TV was on & the local news was showing and we featured in an article, which was done when we were in Ushuaia. The Mendoza Malbec that we had tonight & last night, which is an excellent drop, is Luigi Bosca, perhaps Dan’s might have it.
