13th January 2015 – Puerto Varas and around the lake

Today we drove around the lake but unfortunately it was very overcast and misty with some precipitation about so the views weren’t as good as yesterday afternoon.  Driving in Chile on the right hand side of the road in our right hand drive MG is starting to feel more comfortable.  Turning right is great (just like turning left at home) but turning left feels really weird and we have to concentrate to keep to the right.  I’m sure it will start to feel better soon.  We drove through small lakeside villages on lovely winding MG roads that are in excellent condition.  Our first stop was at a cemetry on top of a hill in Puerto Octay, what a wonderful resting place these people have.  We couldn’t help notice how old most of them were when they died, maybe it’s their lay back lifestyle. We drove about 3/4 of the way up Volcano Osomo to the bottom of the chair lift.  It was even more misty up there and quite bleak, so we didn’t bother taking a ride through the clouds on the chair lift. The drive down was a good test for our brakes and the roads in Peru where we descend from high altitude.  Pleased to report that they performed well unlike Blue B that lost it’s brakes.  We’re off to town now to find a Ferreteria (Hardware store) to buy cartucho gas (butane gas) for our soldering iron.  We’re really enjoying reading the comments being left, so please keep them up as it makes us feel more close to home.  Adios until tomorrow wifi permitting.
