2nd May – Huangshan to Shanghai

Today we have a 450 kilometre drive to Shanghai on the highway and the toll gates are working again so we have to pay as the holiday is over.

At one village that we we passed it looked like the highway had been built right through it as the roof tops peaked up just above the highways railings and they were so close you could almost touch them.

We drive past  many terraced tea plantations as this area is an important tea growing area in China and bamboo forests which look soft & fluffy.

We arrive into Shanghai at about 3pm which means we miss the worst if the peak hour traffic.  At one stage on the Garmin one of the intersections looked like a bowl of noodles had been turned upside down, fortunately we don’t have to go through this one.

Negotiating our way to the hotel is smooth and quick and we avoid any heavy traffic which is amazing.  Shanghai has a population of 24 million people, about the population of the whole of Australia, and has the biggest economy of any city in China.

Today is John’s birthday so we all go by taxi to a Western restaurant called Mr Willis for dinner where we are spoilt with wonderful food, great wine and a very rich chocolate Birthday cake that has lovely gooey ganache, yummy!
