Our guide and bus pick us up from our hotel today at 5 AM so we can see sunrise at Angkor Wat.  It’s always hard getting up so early but it is so worth it to see the sun come up and this was no exception. Angkor Wat is built inside a huge hand dug out moat that like the other temples was covered in jungle.  This temple was a Hindu temple that later became a Buddhist temple and both Hindu gods and different Buddhas adorn it. As the sun came up over the back of the temple it gradually lit up.

After the sun came up we ate our packed breakfast that the hotel gave us.

When inside Sam explains the bas relief murals with the Hindu gods fighting the demons and the mural depicting heaven, earth & hell.  There are also many bas reliefs of the “Temptresses” throughout the temple. These reliefs are in amazingly great condition.

There are Buddhist altars throughout the temple and as a bonus young monks were visiting today.

The colonnade creates a great opportunity for a team photo!

The temple structure is very impressive and immense with a fabulous view from the very top, well worth the time in the queue and the very steep stairs to get there.

We spent quite a bit of time watching the work men get their ladder to go right to the top of the roof.  They had no safety equipment but their hard hats & Cambodian safety boots (barefeet).

After a relaxing couple of hours back at the hotel Michael went for a drive to have another look at Bayon temple.

For dinner tonight we went to a Cambodian buffet and cultural show.  A bit like the Swagman (before it burnt down) only with good food!  The dancers were very beautiful & graceful.

  2. Another great blog. Another early morning but it certainly looks like it was really worth it. Love the photos feel as if we are travelling with you (but in the comfort of our reclining armchairs and cooling and heating keeping us very comfortable). Kay loved seeing you wearing your personal necklace cooling fan hope it is helping with the heat and humidity. Sometimes a little breeze makes us feel more comfortable. Sometimes iceblocks strategically placed also help. Looking forward to the next blog.
    Cheers Bernsdette and Michael

  4. Aaah the reference to the swagman, a standard to which all hotel buffets should be measured on. Bon Apetite & Bon Voyage
