Bergen – 18 June 2018

This morning it’s raining quite heavily as we walk into the city centre of Bergen & unfortunately we forgot to take the umbrella, so we get a bit wet as we have our waterproof jackets on but not our waterproof pants. It’s not unusual for it to rain in Bergen because of the mountains around the city.

Along the harbours edge is the Bergen International wood festival for 2018.  This is a biannual event and this year the theme is climate change.  There are 17 teams entered from 14 countries and it took them 5 days to complete their structures.  We thought that there were better entries than the entry that got 1 st place, maybe they didn’t meet the design criteria.

There are many boats in the harbour including a fabulous sailing boat.

After a coffee & cake we dry out a bit & then visit the old city with its multi coloured timber buildings that are crooked & built on top of each other.  We purchase a print of Viking ships that has been painted by a local artist & it should go well in our new town house as it’s black, Grey & white.

We walk to the old fort – Bergenhus Festning, however the tower is under maintenance & is covered in scaffolding and we can’t get into one side as there are workmen setting up for a concert. What we can see though is lovely.

Tonight we treat ourselves to a 5 course degustation seafood dinner with matched wines at a restaurant called Cornelius.  We have to catch a ferry to get there as it’s on the island of Holmen that takes about 30 minutes, just enough time for a beer, prosecco & wine.

The restaurant is set right on the waters edge with beautiful views.

Our first course is delicious & full of flavour

Our second course is also really tasty with it’s ash trimming

Our third course is main course of salmon & it’s beautiful.

By now we’ve had our before dinner drink plus 3 glasses of wine and both the food and wine are magnificent and we still have a sorbet and desert to come.

We depart when it’s starting to get dark and the setting looks even prettier all lit up.

When we arrive back at Bergen harbour the street is lit up and it all looks a lot different at night. What a lovely grreting to finish a beautiful day & evening.
